How is Gearbox changing the way it develops games? How are they doing it?

Evolution is a vital part of the video game development process. With new technologies comes the chance to improve in ways not done before. Gearbox knows this, and reveals that they've been moving more and more towards the Cloud in recent months.

“We at Gearbox have been making our games more cloud-centric for quite some time,” Gearbox executive producer Sean Reardon wrote in the case study “Today’s players expect games that can change dynamically without having to repeatedly download large, unwieldy patches. They expect games that can recognize and adapt to when and how they like to play. And they want online games that just keep working.”

One of the ways they're going full-force into this is by using Amazon Gamelife, which will help them considerably without forcing them to use a lot of manpower.

“It’s a testament to the incredible effort that bazillions of talented engineers — and bazillions of dollars of investment — that when we started building our online services, which customers know as SHiFT, that it would have been insane to do anything other than lean on the cloud model that was prevalent at the time,”

I wonder if this is going in the direction of platform agnostic games. It's kind of like flash where you are not limited to device. I hope it doesn't end up getting expensive. Nobody wants that for sure.

    Interesting.
I agree with @overcast in that I hope gaming itself doesn't become a cloud based service, ever.

Well that one thought about making it more expensive is not something I really want to think about as I am always on the cynical side of those. Usually all this innovation can lead to costs going down though so I am not really sure.

What would be the disadvantages of that move? A cloud based service would mean the game can be played from multiple devices anytime, which sounds much more convenient

First of all, it would require very fast internet connection, which not everyone has. But, more importantly, they could charge us whatever they wanted for the privilege of playing games on almost every device with good graphics quality. Most likely, it would be monthly subscription based, and the subscription would be overall a lot more expensive than just paying for your games once and playing them whenever you want.

    I see.

I hope Gearbox isn't like EA and that doesn't happen

I don't know. I doubt every game dev/publisher would have their own cloud service. Most likely they would sell game licenses for a good sum to companies that do.

And you will probably have to pay a subscription fee to use said cloud service because they aren't going to make you use it for free.
