    Recommended Browser Software: Firefox (http://www.getfirefox.com)

Please, PLEASE, do not use internet explorer. Firefox is by far the leading browser, but if you're not too keen on it, I recommend Google Chrome. Both are obviously free.

Recommended Firefox Extensions: Adblock Plus, Ghostery, and FasterFox.

    Recommended Anti-Malware Software: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (www.malwarebytes.org)

Free, thorough, stable, not resource-intensive. What more could you ask for?

    Recommended Computer Cleanup Software
    : CCleaner (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner)

Free. Quickly removes junk files and cleans system caches. Many excellent features.

Recommended Video Player: VLC Player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html)

Lightweight, stable, accepts almost every video format.

    Recommended Music Player
    : Foobar2000 (www.foobar2000.org)

iTunes is far too bulky and resource-hogging. Foobar is lightweight, easy to use, and accepts a plethora of third party plugins to enhance your experience.

    More suggestions coming soon!

Get Comodo Ice Dragon. It's a modified version of Firefox that is much faster, and is a lot more secure against hackers, and viruses.

All Firefox Pluggins work with it.

Very interesting, I'll definitely have to do some research into it. Thanks for the heads up. :)

Firefox is really only the leading browser because of the appeal it had when it was released. Being new there were no viruses designed that could affect it making it "safe". It has been around long enough that if somebody wants you to catch a virus through firefox they can do it if you don't take the proper precautions. It is really up to personal preference on what you use. The only significant difference between IE and FF right now is the interface.

Don't get me started on Google Chrome. Their "fastest web browser" thing is a bit of BS. To make full use of it you need to be using their DNS servers which are actually designed to slow down FF and IE if you use them on those servers.

Oh and add TDSSKiller to the list. It is a program to remove rootkits and does it extremely well.

    Recommended firewall: ZoneAlarm

I love this firewall. There is an ad-free version you can purchase, but the free version is really unobtrusive and occasionally pitches a one-window ad to you, which you can close out of and forget about for a week or so.

This is one of those firewalls that, if you want it to, will ask you before any program does anything. You can click "allow" and you won't see the notification again, but for example, before starting Borderlands 2 for the first time, it asks you if it's okay if the BL2 exe can access the Internet, as well as asking you if it's okay for Steam to access it as well.

This is especially useful if you get a piece of rogue software or a rogue file that is written to execute things it's not supposed to. ZoneAlarm will catch this, mark it as suspicious behavior, and ask you before continuing.

    Recommended peer blocker: PeerBlock

It's simple: once installed, it will generally update it's list every time you start it, and block IP addresses that are trying to access your IP. Most of the time, it's really interesting the raw number of IP's this thing blocks in a given timeframe...anything from Apple Computer (probably via iTunes or something) and Valve (Steam), to random Russian and Chinese networks that have no business talking to my computer
